L'Absie with its population of 1132, is centred around the remains of a medieval abbey patronised by Eleanor of Aquitaine, There are shops bars and restaurants. During the week the local baker, fishmonger, grocer and butcher bring a selection of their local produce to sell outside Chez Rogers / Rue de la Morinère. Several bakers come daily and the bulk wine merchant delivers weekly. There is a hard tennis court at l'Absie 2 miles away and more courts and a pool at La Chataigneraie.
The nearest city is ancient Parthenay, a small medieval city overlooking a river. Parthenay also known for its breed of cattle. There is a golf course at Mazières en Gatine near Parthenay. The local villages are very picturesque. The coastline with magnificent sands at Les Sables d'Olonne and La Tranche sur Mer, and the ancient, historic port and city of La Rochelle with its famous restaurants, splendid shops, quays and markets, museums, aquarium and boat trips are worth a visit. The Parc oriental de Maulévrier / The oriental park of Maulevrier is the largest Japanese style ornamental park in Europe.
Also worth visiting are the Puy du Fou with historic spectacles on a grand scale during the summer months, Futuroscope near Poitiers, the Zoo at Les Sables d'Olonne and Pescalis - the new International Fishing Centre, which is located 10 minutes drive from the house and caters for all the family as well as fishers. There is go-karting 10 minutes away and micro-light flying 10 minutes also.
There is pony riding in beautiful medieval Vouvant and pedaloes on a lake at La Tardière. There are many local restaurants in the area with good food all very reasonably priced. There are also chateaux to explore locally and markets for those who enjoy local produce at inexpensive prices. Farmers' markets take place regularly through the summer and vide greniers can be found in the area if you like hunting for antiques. There are local footpaths for those who enjoy exploring on foot and walking, and it is good cycling country as well. There is an indoor swimming pool at Moncoutant which is 10 minutes from the house by car and a lake with pedaloes, tennis court, boules ground and an open-air pool open through July and August for swimming at Secondigny, 10 minutes from the house.
