The Creuse - Limousin region

On foot, pedal power, horse power, water or wheels – whatever your choice, there are beautiful places in Limousin for all. In many of the well known beauty spots there are wooden picnic tables so that you can rest a while and take in the loveliness while you enjoy some refreshment.

La Souterraine is our nearest town and its name means ‘the underground’ – this is because there is a network of formerly secret tunnels beneath the oldest parts of the town linking the important places. There is a medieval gate way to the old part of the town, called the Porte St Jean and this used to be guarded and also contained the prison. Numerous other historic, fascinating and lovely stone buildings are to be found in the town. There are shops, local in character and two large superstores; Champion and Leclerc, plus DIY shops, farm suppliers, doctors, pharmacies and gardening shops.

Well worth a visit is the Crozant and Fresselines area, confluence of the rivers La Creuse, La Petite Creuse and the Sedelle. Discover thrilling sights, many of which have inspired paintings and poetry, (e.g. Monet, Rollinat) and still do. Follow the indicators for a ramble which will take you 3.5 kms from behind the church at Crozant, through the majestic woods and granite gorges of the river Creuse, past the ruins of a medieval castle and pretty water mills. In the summer, walk through cool green tunnels of trees along the banks of the Sedelle, or come in autumn when the green gives way to fiery orange, gold and yellow alongside the powerful clear water rolling over huge humps of sleepy-looking granite.

Discover the dolmens: of which there are many in Limousin, for example the ‘Pierres Folles’ of St Priest la Feuille which are said to be seven petrified virgins who may still come alive at dusk in the presence of a womaniser and lure him into their trap ….well worth a cautious look.

If you like a panoramic view, visit St Goussaud where, from the viewing point some 700m above sea level, it is possible to spot landmarks up to 160 kms away, and whether you can spot these or not, is quite breathtakingly beautiful.

Toulx St Croix offers an exciting prospect for lovers of medieval stone edifices, an ancient priory and numerous stone crosses in the village, as well as the tower of the Abbey Aguillaume, and an 11th century church.

Animal lovers might well enjoy a visit to Chabrières Forest, said to be enchanted because of the mysterious look which erosion has given to the rock layers. There is a park within the forest where wolves can be seen and a ‘wolf stone’ (La Pierre du Loup).

Aubusson is famous for tapestries and has been a centre for production of rugs and wall hangings for hundreds of years. There is a museum at in the town where many magnificent tapestries can be seen, ancient and modern.

Limousin is a good area for shopping too! Limoges, the capital of Limousin offers many interesting boutiques and speciality shops alongside the usual gigantic stores which can be found all over France. Porcelain is strongly associated with Limoges, and there are several producers of fine porcelain still operating in the city. Factory shops offer cheaper prices all year round, and during the sales there are some fantastic bargains.
