Cumbrian Castle description

Amazing location, near The Lake District Park

Spacious, and comfortable rooms, full of character

Part of a 15th century castle !

Cumbrian Castle, near Penrith

Be part of the history of this country when you stay at this self-contained wing apartment, as the historic fortified tower dates back to the “War of the Roses”.

The apartment has space for 6 adults, and 1 child.

Grounds & Surrounds

With a designated area of ground allocated to the apartment at entrance level, there is also shared access to some of the rest of the 14 acres of grounds, including woodland walks. A small river runs past the castle and kingfishers and otters are seen occasionally. A separate driveway takes you to the side of the castle and there is parking for about four cars here. Please be aware that the owners of the main section of the castle have hens that are free-range within the policy. The castle is ideal for those looking for a special place for a family occasion or family holiday for a weekly rental, (whilst weekend rentals are not available).

Reception rooms

The large sitting room, which dates back to the 15th century, is a simply furnished room, with distinctive oak beams on the ceiling. With comfortable seating, TV and wood-burning stove, this is a cosy room to retire to. Access to this first floor room is via the steep stone spiral stairs. A small room on the ground floor, formerly the cold store, now houses a small pool table.

Kitchen / Dining

The dining room has character and atmosphere in abundance, with this section also dating back to the 15th century. Access is via stone steps into this stone clad room with stone flagons on the floor. With oak beams and game hooks in the ceiling, you can just imagine an old English ham being hung and stored above in days of old. Today, there is a dining table that can seat 6 and a wood-burning stove to warm up the room, making this ideal for romantic candle-lit meals or medieval themed evenings. The kitchen is next door and is simply furnished, which also has flagstones on the floor and game hooks and oak beams on the ceiling. The AGA is situated below the inglenook, but there is also an electric cooker with oven. There is seating for 6 in this room too.

The Penrith - Cumbria & Lake District region

The Market town of Penrith is located on the River Eamont in the Cumbrian countryside. About 12 lies to the east is the foot of the Penine Hills, offering a verifiable wealth of wilderness for walking and nature exploration. Just three miles to the west is the boundary of the Lake District National Park, and a few miles further on is Ullswater, one of the larger lakes. The town centre offers a range of attractions, with a selection of shops and restaurants suitable for everyone. The ruins of the 14th Century Penrith Castle can be found in the centre, once the luxurious residence of Richard III. Sitting to the south east on the river bank, is Brougham Castle, the formidable stronghold has fallen into ruin, but the keep still stands today. The town offers two golfing options, Penrith Golf Club, and Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range. Nearby the Rhaged Centre offers a range of attractions, with many options for children’s play and entertainment, café’s and a cinema and exhibition centre.
