The Akbuk - Aegean Coast region

An undiscovered gem on the Aegean Coast, Akbuk is a small, quiet, traditional Turkish fishing village yet a short distance (only 15 minutes bus journey) from the busier and more popular resort of Altinkum-Didim. Akbuk is situated between the more well known coastal resorts of Kusadasi and Bodrum which are easily visited on day trips either by car or coach trips (from nearby Altinkum).

Akbuk is an idyllic and peaceful village situated around a large secluded tree-lined bay which is surrounded by green mountains and large areas of protected pine tree forests. Akbuk is infamous for its sunsets and the sea is crystal clear and quite shallow (quite safe for young children).

Unlike Altinkum-Didim, with their high rise apartment blocks, Akbuk has height restrictions so private apartments are only allowed to be built up to 2.5 storeys high and the land in Akbuk can only be built on to a maximum of 15%.

Akbuk is primarily a resort frequented by local Turkish tourists, with a variety of good quality, modern and traditional restaurants which offer good value for money in relaxed atmospheres without the hustle and bustle of livelier resorts. Some of the seafood restaurants put the days fresh catch from Akbuk harbour on display for you to choose from and many of the restaurants have marvellous uninterrupted sea views.

The resort is very popular with Turkish holiday makers during the high season giving it a real Turkish vibrancy. Outside of the peak summer months of July and August Akbuk is more tranquil when relaxation is the order of the day. There is a weekly market every Friday just a short stroll from the apartment where one can find anything from cheap fruit, vegetables, fish to spices and jewellery! The busier resort of Altinkum is 15-20 min. ride away by local Dolmus (small bus) with its many bars and shops.

Due to Akbuk's close proximity to Altinkum-Didim it has been discovered by some British tourists but not by the masses. Therefore no kiss-me-quick hats/karaoke atmosphere and jam-packed beaches!

There are a wide variety of activities available around Akbuk which include walking, cycling and jeep safari. Trips including the water park, Bodrum, Kusadasi, Apollo temple in nearby Didim, Bafa lake, scuba diving, and a large number of boat trips both from Akbuk and Altinkum (over to the Greek Island of Kos). There are numerous boat trips from Akbuk harbour (250 mtrs from apartment). Alternatively one can catch a dolmus (small bus) to Altinkum for those who do not wish to drive and take an organised boat trip to the nearby Greek island of Kos. From Altinkum there are a number of organised trips to places of historical and natural interest, as mentioned above, as well as to Kusadasi and Bodrum, which can be booked locally and you can be picked up from the apartment or explore yourself by the local dolmus which is extremely cheap.

Altinkum - 10Km (apx):
Altinkum is a beach lover’s paradise with very shallow waters. In the evening, should you want a ‘livelier’ atmosphere Altinkum offers a mix of Turkish and English run music bars (some of which are showing 'big screen' football matches). There is also a good variety of restaurants and nightclubs along the seafront promenade. It can get a little noisy after dark when the holiday spirit is in full swing, the total opposite of the quieter, more reserved, resort of Akbuk with its more traditional Turkish atmosphere!

Didim-07Km (apx):
Didim is a large town adjacent to Altinkum which offers many shopping opportunities with modern shops and markets to explore, but the best place for a weekly shopping trip in Didim is called ‘Gima’. Didim is known worldwide as the home of the 'Temple of Apollo'. A new marina is also being built in Didim.

From Didim there are also boat trips to Kusadasi and from there you can go to the Greek Island of Samos. From Bodrum there are daily boat trips to Kos and Rhodes.

Kusadasi - 70Km:
Kusadasi is probably Turkey's most versatile resort with a large choice of restaurants and bars. Kusadasi has one of the largest marinas along the coast and is therefore a stop-over point for large cruise vessels who visit the ancient roman city of 'Ephesus'.

In Kusadasi there is also a market bazaar and aquapark. One can also take an organised boat trip to the Greek Island of Kos.

Bodrum - 90Km:
Bodrum is Turkey’s oldest tourist resort and has many attractions and caters to many different types of visitor. It is popular with the yachting crowd who moor up in the large harbour and frequent the waterfront bars and restaurants. It is a great place to be young and fashionable, rivalling the Mediterranean hotspots of Ibiza in Spain and Mykonos in Greece. Bodrum also has the best range of shopping and dining in the Aegean with something to suit everyone's pocket.

In addition to the above there is also Bodrum Castle, underwater archaeological museum, the largest open-air disco "Halikarnas" and a market bazaar - 90 Km.

PLACES OF INTEREST:
There are many places of historical and natural interest around the Aegean Coast region within a 2 hour drive of the apartment but the closest site is the huge ‘Temple of Apollo’, located in Didim, which is well worth a visit. However, for those of you who do not wish to drive there are numerous coach tours which leave from Altinkum on a daily basis during high season not only to the nearby coastal resorts of Bodrum and Kusadasi, but also to the following places of historical and natural interest:

Adaland: The largest aquapark in Europe - located near Kusadasi - see link on this web site.

Temple of Apollo:
The ancient Temple of Apollo at Didyma 5 km north of Altinkum was the third largest structure of the ancient Greek world when built around 1000 BC.

The Castle of St Peter:
Located in Bodrum and is one of the finest and most complete castles in Turkey, built by the crusading Knights of St John in 1408. It is also home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology displaying unique collections of ancient artefacts.

Miletos:
Ancient times philosophy centre 19 Km

Akköy:
Village Vine, Old Greek Houses 15 Km

Ephesus:
Ancient Roman city 90 Km

Soke:
Market Bazaar 50 Km

Pamukkale:
One of Turkey’s most beautiful and spectacular landscapes – The ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ - 220 Km

Priene:
The House of Alexander The Great, Athena temple 40 Km

Pamukkale:
(Pamuk-kalay) means ‘cotton castle’ in Turkish. This huge natural travertine (a type of crystalline rock) fountain is one of Turkey’s most famous attractions. Relax in the thermal springs renowned for their therapy and visit the Roman Baths, theatre and ancient city of Hierapolis

Ephesus:
One of the largest and most complete ancient city in the eastern Mediterranean, situated 19 km (12 miles) north east of Kusadasi. It is a must-see even if you are not into history. The exceptionally well-preserved buildings allow us to step back in time to life in Roman Asia Minor over 1500 years ago.

Priene:
The ancient harbor city Priene, now located at the foot of a spectacular cliff on Mount Mycale presents a breathtaking view of Soke lowland created by the Meander River.

In addition to the above there is also an aqua park just outside Altinkum which can be reached using the local ‘dolmus’ buses. and the natural beauty of Dilek Peninsula, the Meander delta, Bafa Lake and the 60km coast with hundred of coves, a bonus for land based travellers.

Maxi Tours offer a host of both daily and weekly Conducted Tours (www.maxitourdidim.com) at competitive prices, inclusive of lunch.

Tours leave from both Akbuk and Altinkum, which can be reached by a short 15 minute car journey or by dolmus (bus), a short stroll from the apartment.

Parking: There is off street parking at the side of the property, just outside the Seashell Complex.

The apartment is a mere 250 metres easy walk from all main facilities in Akbuk, beach and harbour, this apartment has 2 balconies (one which allows you to monitor your children around the swimming pool area) and is on a small, well maintained quiet complex consisting of a large communal pool and children’s splash pool, all set within landscaped and walled gardens surrounded by individual villas with private pools and a small number of apartments. There is ample parking at the entrance of the complex.

There are ample sun beds and patio furniture for use on either the 2 ground floor balconies or for use around the pool.

Note that land opposite the Akbuk coastline is relatively flat and then starts to rise into the hills the further away from the beach you are.
